Essential Materials Needed for Your Basic Art Kit

As we grow as artists, the tools we use become more important. No matter what your age, or level of skill, everyone needs these basic supplies in their art kit.

  • Drawing Pencil Set: These will often come in handy tin containers that includes a variety of graphite sizes.
  • Sketchbook: Choose a sketchbook that you can use with different mediums. They come in paperback and hardcover that are either spiral, sewn or glue bound. Sketchbooks come in several sizes. Choose a size that accommodates your needs the best.
  • Erasers: There are several types of erasers. It’s a good idea to have one of each on hand.
    • Rubber – Uses friction to remove material from paper
    • Kneaded Eraser – Rather than using friction, it “lift” material. It can be kneaded and pulled into specific forms to correct small, precise areas.
    • Gum Eraser – Like the rubber eraser, it uses friction. However, when erasing, it crumbles, preserving the paper. This eraser is really good for removing material from surfaces that are susceptible to tearing.
  • Pencil Sharpener: All you need is a simple hand-held sharpener with a metal blade.
  • Charcoal: Charcoal can come in either stick or pencil form.
  • Colored Pencils: You only need to start with your basic colors. Choose a quality brand of pencils. They may cost a little more, but the vivid colors will be worth it.

To complete you basic art kit, you will need something to store your supplies in. You will need a portable container that lets you keep your materials organized. Many choose to use something along the lines of a toolbox of fishing tackle box.

You will surly add more mediums and supplies as you build your art kit up to become your own.

Happy Drawing!
